Amy Hannah Johnston, a retired Brigadier General from Fredericksburg, VA, served over three decades in the U.S. Army, leaving a legacy of leadership, dedication, and service. Born in Edina, MN, and raised in Findlay, OH, her Midwestern roots shaped her strong work ethic and commitment to community. These values have guided her throughout her military career and post-service life.

During her military service, Amy Johnston played significant roles in humanitarian and combat missions worldwide. She served in Seoul, Korea, and Mons, Belgium, taking critical positions at the United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, Korea, and the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE). She also continues to serve as an advisor for the Center for Information, Democracy, and Citizenship at the American University in Bulgaria, where she contributes to global democracy and civic engagement.

Amy is exceptionally committed to honoring her late husband, Major General Gary W. Johnston, who passed away unexpectedly. She established the Gary Johnston Leadership Award at Arkansas Tech University in his honor. This award celebrates outstanding leadership, echoing the qualities her husband embodied during his distinguished military career.

Her educational background played a significant role in her success. Amy Hannah earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Ohio State University, followed by a master’s degree in Communications from the American University in Washington, DC. These fields of study gave her valuable insights into human behavior and organizational structures, knowledge integral to her military success. She furthered her education with an M.S. in National Resource Strategy from the Eisenhower School at the National Defense University. She graduated from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Throughout her 31-year military career, Amy held senior-level positions across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, demonstrating excellent communication skills and strategic thinking. She played key roles in humanitarian efforts, including Operation Sea Signal in Cuba, where she assisted Cuban and Haitian migrants seeking asylum. Additionally, she contributed to disaster relief efforts after Hurricane Katrina and supported Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan following the 9/11 attacks.

After retiring from the military, Amy continued her service in the community. She actively participates in Tree Fredericksburg, promoting environmental sustainability by supporting local tree-planting efforts. She also volunteers with her therapy dog, Duke, through the Alliance for Therapy Dogs, offering support to military veterans in Virginia.
